Every other identity is an illusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>~ Brennan Manning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nlight was brilliant. It was so bright in those brief moments that anyone peeking\nthrough the bushes would have been forced to shield his eyes or the result\nwould have been instant blindness. The air was saturated and dripped with the\nglory of that glow, like the white-hot arc of a welder. The intensity seemed to\nwithdraw after a few moments as though something or someone had stepped back. Once\nagain the brightness of the noonday sun ruled the sky, but noticeably dimmer in\ncomparison to what had transpired only seconds before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nbeside the river an exquisite creature, by all accounts, lay motionless in a\nsmall crater surrounded by reddish dust. It had not fallen from the sky, but rather\nit seemed to have been scooped from the very soil it now rested in.\nWell-proportioned and muscular like a Greek statue chiseled out of ruddy marble,\nthe figure lay on its back facing the heavens\u2014still and silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ngentle breeze blowing from east to west suddenly changed and began swirling\ndownward. The wind began to pick up and in an instant became a howling vortex. Suddenly\nthis violent rushing wind descended from the heavens and engulfed the\nmotionless, mounded figure. The upper half of the body lurched upward, as the\nwind filled it like a hand in a glove. A glorious shadow passed over in that\nmoment, and power surged like an invisible switch had been flipped. Then the\nfigure relaxed and its chest began to rise and fall in a rhythmic motion. <em>Adamah<\/em>, the lifeless red dust of\ncreation, had now become <em>Adam<\/em>, a\nliving soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCreator leaned back and gazed at his creation and proclaimed, \u201cThis is very\ngood!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\u2014another\nset of eyes witnessed the miracle of the dust that day. Hidden in the lush\nundergrowth near the river\u2019s edge, a creature known as <em>Nahash<\/em>, the serpent,plotted\nhis next move. Filled with jealousy and disgust, he coiled to stay hidden,\nmuffling the roar that now arose from within the depths of his dark soul. He\nstrained to hear the conversation, as those first intimate words were spoken\nbetween Father and son. With contempt, he watched as that same Father\nintroduced his son to the safety of a specially prepared garden\u2014and <em>Nahash <\/em>waited, remembering his own\nmarvelous creation and his subsequent fall from grace, kicked out of a garden\nwith the same familiar name. In time, he too would visit this special garden,\nthis exquisite environment, and see what could be done to confuse the creature\nand thwart the Creator\u2019s carefully designed plan. <em>Nahash<\/em> would have his revenge, and God would be forced to come up\nwith another plan. Yes, that\u2019s it\u2014mess up Plan A, and then God will be forced\nto come up with Plan B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And\nso \u201cthe plan\u201d unfolds. But\u2026which plan are we following?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Design by the Divine<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>God\ndesigned the man and woman to live life from the garden. Eden was divinely\ndesigned and carefully constructed to educate the first couple in all the\nnuances of what identity meant\u2014to discover who and what they were as they\ndiscovered who God is. Without that discovery and exploration of God, there\ncould be no real discovery of themselves. This discovery would form a relationship,\nand trust would evolve. This trust would then produce love, and the\nrelationship would come full circle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The garden was the meeting place where God and\nhumanity would intersect and interact. It was the place like this\u2014a place of\nwonder and discovery\u2014a place of choice and decision. It was Adam and Eve\u2019s\naddress, not God\u2019s. It was the place God had fashioned so that the first couple\ncould step into the destiny he had personally designed for them. From the garden\nthey would learn to live out Plan A\u2014God\u2019s perfect plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything\nthey needed to discover the abundance of God\u2019s love and grace were present in\nthe garden. God had thought of everything. Food and water were in abundance.\nThe weather was perfect\u2014not too hot or cold. No need to build a house\u2014the whole\nof the garden was their mansion. Rain, snow, sleet, and hail were not yet a\npart of their environment. The sun warmed them by day, and the moon and stars\nserved as a nightlight to guide them through the dark hours. They were immersed\nin the vast goodness of God\u2019s gifts, through which they would soon discover the\nintimacy of his heart. It was a special gift\u2014his heart\u2014he longed to share\nwithout holding anything back. It was truly an opportunity <em>of<\/em> a lifetime and an opportunity <em>for<\/em> a lifetime with no expiration date stamped on the label. The\nopportunity was open-ended\u2014eternal. Did I say \u201cwas\u201d? I\u2019m sorry; I meant to say\n\u201cis\u201d open-ended\u2014eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At\nthis point you may be thinking, \u201cHey, what do you mean \u2018is\u2019? That\u2019s not the\nquality of life I\u2019m currently experiencing. In fact, that seems a bit bizarre.\nMy life is just the opposite of that. That sounds like a fairy tale\u2014too good to\nbe true!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nsounds too good to be true because we have settled for a bogus plan. We have\naccepted less than what God intends. We have embraced Plan B although God never\ninitiated anything but Plan A. Somewhere along the way, we have been deceived.\nPlan B has robbed us of our relationship, our identity, and our purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>The Quest for Identity<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What\nthe devil fears, he seeks to confuse. Where confusion reigns, chaos results.\nWhen chaos exists, ignorance runs rampant. And as ignorance picks up speed and\nshifts into high gear, all kind of bad things happen. Fear, uncertainty, insecurity,\nand weakness soon become the trademark threads that weave the fabric of an\nidentity. Fear begets fear, and the result is that we are robbed of the very\nthing God intended to be a source of encouragement and strength\u2014our identity as\nhis child\u2014his son or daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing\nintrudes on this archdemon\u2019s territory more than a person who knows who they\nare in Christ. Some say superior knowledge or physical strength is power, but a\nsettled identity produces a confident internal unity that is impregnable to the\nforces of darkness. If Satan cannot get a foothold, he is powerless. If he\ncannot gain a partner, he is impotent. If he cannot confuse us, uncertainty,\ninsecurity, and weakness are rendered null and void and cannot be used against\nus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satan\n(that crafty serpent <em>Nahash<\/em>) fears\nthe implications of Plan A. Plan A gives us a relationship with God, an identity\nfrom God, and a purpose in God. The scope of that plan is endless, but unless\nwe understand who we are because of <em>whose<\/em>\nwe are, it is likely we will never enjoy the riches of this relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nis not a book about a cunning serpent\u2014a devil in disguise. This is God\u2019s\nschematic masterpiece for the ages\u2014his only plan for all of humanity. This is\nthe tale of who we already are\u2014the real us\u2014the person God sees and says we are.\nThis is a tool to help us reclaim every smidgen of our full identity in Christ.\nBut for this to be a reality, we must recognize the lie and jettison the idea\nthat God has ever entertained a Plan B. That\u2019s not even possible. He has one\nplan, and it is perfect. This is the unfolding of our true identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>This Entity Known as Identity<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two\nvery common questions that often arise in a counseling session are: (1) who am\nI; and (2) why am I here? They are profound questions of identity and purpose\nthat must be discovered and answered by each of us. Tragically, many don\u2019t seem\nto know where to look or how to find the real answers to these life-altering\ndilemmas. Unless a person recognizes who they are and realizes what their\npurpose is, they are doomed to wonder endlessly as they wander aimlessly\nthrough life, tossed to and fro on the cruel waves of what may come next in the\ncrashing surf of life\u2019s situations and circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identity\nis the key, but it is a tough concept to define if we depend solely on the philosophers,\npsychologists, or anthropologists to come to our aid. There are numerous\nstudies and theories, but no simple definition. Add to that the proliferation\nof the Internet with social media like Facebook, Twitter, and countless online\ncommunities where we can anonymously be anyone we choose to be as long as we\ndon\u2019t get caught. Identity seems to be a relative term that can mean any number\nof things to different people. Therefore, it is essential that we construct a\ngeneral definition of identity so that we are all on the same page, if we\neventually hope to arrive at the same destination together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\nand I are unique. Every human being is. We may be similar with much in common,\nand yet we are not exact. There are no absolute or faithful and accurate copies\nwalking around that perfectly mirror you. That\u2019s the case even if you are a\nmonozygotic (identical) twin, meaning you and your sibling developed from one\nzygote that split and formed two embryos. In spite of this, you possess quite a\nfew unique qualities or characteristics that are extraordinarily different from\nyour brother or sister. No one has your fingerprints or the iris pattern of\nyour eyes. Your tongue has both geometric shapes and physiological texture that\nmake it exclusive to you. No other dental records perfectly match the X-rays\ntaken of that mouth full of incisors, canines, premolars, and molars that are\nembedded in your jaws. Even your DNA, although very similar in many ways to\nvarious other creatures, makes you distinctively you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes,\nas human beings we all have similar characteristics, but no two of us are\nalike, and the reason rests within the heart of our Divine Designer. He was the\narchitect of creation and with his voice spoke everything visible and invisible\ninto existence, everything except us. We are made in his image and in his\nlikeness (Genesis 1:26-27). God formed the man from the <em>adamah<\/em>\u2014the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7) and fashioned the woman\nfrom a fistful of tissue, blood, muscle, and bone he took from the man\u2019s side\n(Genesis 2:22). Each was unique in his or her own creation, yet similar.\nConsider this for a moment: God is so complex, infinite, and so beyond anything\nour finite minds can fully comprehend, that perhaps out of his love for\ndiversity\u2014in the creation of us as human beings\u2014he put a pinch of his infinite\nself in the mix to make each of us a tiny bit different. There is no cosmic human\ncookie cutter that God uses to stamp out this diverse tribe we call the human\nrace. As Homo sapiens, we are surprisingly and gratifyingly different. This\ndistinctiveness is the structure on which our identity hangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An\nidentity defines you as a person. Your personal identity is singularly you. It\nis who you really are and one of your most treasured possessions. It is\ncomposed of your own individual comprehension of yourself (meaning you realize\nthat you are alive and exist\u2014which is what Adam learned in the garden), those\nphysiological traits that are exclusively yours, and certain information\namassed over time that can be used to identify, contact, or locate you from\namong the other 6.5 billion human residents of this community we call Earth.\nThat identity is a vital element of Plan A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Documents that Identify<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam\nnever asked, \u201cWho\u2019s my daddy?\u201d His first glance was up into the eyes of God, and\nthe answer was obvious. Some might want to argue that this was simply a\nsymbolic or spiritual familial illustration, but the words of Scripture\ndocument the paternity of Adam by divine creation and supernatural decree.\nAccording to the genealogy of Jesus found in Luke 3, the last four words of\nverse 38 seem to indicate far more than merely the use of symbolism or a\nmetaphor to communicate a spiritual truth. It designates in simple, straightforward\nterms that Adam was <em>the<\/em> son of God, not\njust <em>a<\/em> son of God. The verse is\nunique in all of Scripture, because it is the only place where anyone other than\nJesus Christ is called <em>the<\/em> son of\nGod. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nthe spring of 1956, a baby was born to a young couple at Carraway Hospital in\nBirmingham, Alabama, in the wee hours of the morning. As an anxious husband and\ndad paced about in the waiting room (this was long before birthing suites and\ndirect daddy participation), a doctor named Boulaware made a final check of\nboth mother and infant, scribbled a few notes to confirm sex, weight, length,\ndate and time of birth, and headed out the doors of the delivery room to give a\nwaiting father the good news. I was that infant, and those notes the doctor\nmade quickly found their way into my initial record\u2014the paper trail that identifies\nme. The hospital issued a birth certificate stating my name, date of birth, my\nfather and mother\u2019s names, the city and state of birth, and the attending\nphysician, along with other pertinent information that became a part of my\nidentity even before I had any sense of my own existence (other than the\noccasional dirty diaper and the incessant and ravenous desire for milk). This\nofficial credential certified and verified that I was now a bona fide citizen\nof the United States, entitled to certain inalienable rights under the\nConstitution. A copy was mailed to my parents, and another was filed at the\nJefferson County Department of Health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over\nthe course of my life, my birth certificate proved to be the indispensable\nmeans of confirming I am who I claim to be. It was the required identification\nalong with a certificate of immunization that ensured I was accepted into the\nworld of public education. Later, that same identifying document was required\nto obtain a Social Security card, play high school football, and get a driver\u2019s\nlicense. My Social Security card came with a number that verified my identity\nand allowed me to open a bank account, get a job, pay my taxes, obtain a\npassport, and vote. My driver\u2019s license doubles as a picture ID and can be used\nwhen my identity is questioned, or I want to purchase an airline ticket, rent a\ncar, or verify my ownership of a charge card. I also have a passport that\nallows me to travel to other countries and validates my American citizenship.\nEach of these documents is an essential verification of my identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like\nAdam, I too have clear proof that I am who I claim to be. I have an identity\nthat can be proven by documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>A Crippling Dilemma<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\nprobably have all or at least some of these same documents. Each one is a\ntreasured benefit of living in this country\u2014a part of what it means to be a\nUnited States citizen. Each of these documented details confirms our personal\nidentities as citizens of this country and gives us access to specific benefits\nand liberties. This access enhances and protects our ability to conduct\nbusiness and take care of our families. It allows us the privilege of writing\nand cashing checks, as well has having a savings account or a credit or debit\ncard. It enables us to pay only the debts we incur and allows the proper amount\nof taxes to be withheld from our earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nis essential that we have access to these documents and understand their value\nand worth. It is our responsibility to know how and when to use them. We must\ntake the initiative to guard and protect them. It is mind-boggling to think\nabout where I would be right now or the things I would have missed if I had\nnever accessed each one of them. It would have been absurd not to have properly\nobtained each one and preposterous to have received them but never to have\nopened the envelope they came in. Any of these actions would have seriously\ncrippled my ability to enjoy the quality of life and the freedoms living in\nthis country affords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly,\nwhen it comes to one\u2019s spiritual identity\u2014who we are in Christ, which is God\u2019s\noriginal intent\u2014this is the crippling dilemma that the vast majority of Christians\nfind themselves in at this very moment. I\u2019m not talking about misplacing one\u2019s\ndriver\u2019s license or Social Security card. Nor am I referring to the loss of\none\u2019s passport or voter\u2019s card. Thank God we are not required to have a\nspiritual set of those. I am talking about your spiritual birth certificate.\nSpiritually speaking, do you really comprehend its value? Are you intimately\nfamiliar with the rights and privileges it affords you? Do you really\nunderstand who you are in Christ? Do you know who you are, whose you are, and\nwhy you\u2019re here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nam not questioning if you know Christ. Only you and the Holy Spirit can answer\nthat. I am asking if you know who you are in Christ, and if you are living out\nof the benefits and privileges of that identity on a daily basis. Far too many\nbelievers are living light years below the spiritual poverty line. They are\nscratching out a meager existence, scrounging through the leftover crumbs of\nanother person\u2019s experience with God, instead of having their own. They are\nfrustrated, hungry, and ready to give up. They are picking through the scraps\nof some empty theology that has been perpetrated in a pulpit but not\nsubstantiated from the Bible. Or worse, the enemy has lured them into his own\ngarbage dumpster and convinced them that what they are choking down is the best\nthat God can provide\u2014camouflaged with a devilish forgery the serpent has\ndesignated as God\u2019s Plan B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead\nof living in the victory of the cross and enjoying a life-giving relationship\nwith Jesus, many of us have gulped down a belly full of religious Kool-Aid,\nwhich promised everything but delivered little, and now we suffer the pangs of poisoning.\nMany have chosen to be victims of circumstance and happenstance\u2014gorged on\nhelplessness and despair, existing but not really living\u2014rather than partners\nwith God, having access to all the riches in the heavenly realms in Christ.\nThis is not about \u201chealth and wealth\u201d or \u201cname it and claim it.\u201d This is about opening\nthe rest of the gift you received when you were born again by the grace of God.\nThat precious gift of salvation contains far more than a celestial fire\ninsurance policy that provides you with one free get-out-of-hell card and\nentrance into some narcissistic retirement community with the guaranteed\nsatisfaction of your every whim. It\u2019s time to spread the plan on the table and\ntake a closer look at the blueprints. It\u2019s time to open your gift box from God\nand find that the devil has deceived you into accepting far less than what God\nhas provided. The time has come to examine and claim the rights and privileges\ncontained in the same Plan A God offered to Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>An Invitation<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before\nyou read further, please consider the following statement made by Jesus to his\ndisciples on the night before his crucifixion and to us as well: \u201cI tell you\nthe truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and\neven greater works, because I am going to be with the Father\u201d (John 14:12 NLT).\nFaith in Jesus is the only prerequisite mentioned in this verse. Faith in Jesus\nis required for salvation. Therefore, if we are saved, we should be doing the\nworks Jesus did and even greater ones. That\u2019s what Jesus said, and that\u2019s what\nhe meant. That\u2019s a part of God\u2019s Plan A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple question: Are you doing the works\nJesus did and even greater ones?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before\nyou answer, I know most of the excuses because at one time or another I\u2019ve used\nthem. You know the ones\u2014God no longer does that\u2026or that\u2026or that. The only\nproblem with that is it won\u2019t stand up under the scrutiny of the Scripture. He\nis the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Forever reaches back past\nthe creation of Adam, before time began, and into the far horizon of eternity.\nHe is the same God who scooped the clay, formed it into a shape, and jump-started\nit with a breath of his Spirit. He has not changed, nor can he change. To do so\nwould forever alter and destroy his immutable character. There cannot be one plan\nfor Adam and another for you or me. The same plan\u2014Plan A\u2014is still in effect.\nWhat was possible for Adam has already been assured for us in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our\nproblem is unbelief, and this unbelief has its roots in our ignorance of who\nthe resurrected Jesus really is and what he has done for and in us. We have\nbelieved the same lie\u2014that God has another plan\u2014and we have swallowed it hook,\nline, and sinker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s\nthe invitation: If you love Jesus and you hunger to know him in a deeper way,\nso that you might become all he says you are and be able to achieve all he says\nyou can do, consider pondering prayerfully the following chapters. If your\nworld is marked by confusion or chaos, and the fists of fear, insecurity, or\nuncertainty pummel you unmercifully into the dust, this may be the cool sip of\nwater and mind-clearing moment of biblical truth that will help you regain your\nbalance and swing back. If you sense there\u2019s something missing, this may help\nyou find what you\u2019re looking for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\nif you\u2019re satisfied with who and what you are right now, content with the\nperson you have become, put this book down. It\u2019s probably not for you. If you\nhave become secure in yourself, there will be little interest in who Jesus says\nyou are anyway.
