Painted Wind – Book Two

In a world of shape-shifting monsters, who can be trusted?

Despite the prophecy that changed her life forever, former gravedigger Rigan North has found love with the man of her dreams. But a peaceful future isn’t yet within reach. Hunted by two rival kings and sought by Jardians and Calidorians alike as the symbol of a new rebellion, Rigan struggles to find her place, increasingly drawn to the Shro Khan’s siren song. How will her child save the world if Rigan cannot resist the monsters’ call?

Leagues away, Isel has grown up in a sheltered monastery as the daughter of a monk. All she desires is to live an ordinary life with her books, but her uncanny resemblance to the so-called Reign Breaker and her unusual ability to detect the Shro Khan’s presence tears her from her home and thrusts her into a world of intrigue, power struggles, and deadly secrets. Kept captive by Jardia’s king, her only true ally is melancholy, wheelchair-bound Crown Prince Soren, the Reign Breaker’s brother-in-law and a brilliant, dangerous man. But Soren’s destiny is not his own, either, and with ambiguous prophecies linking his name to hers, the path to save the Twin Kingdoms may forever diverge from the path that sets Isel free.

Reign Breaker by J.J Fischer was an amazing read !
I had read the first book in this series (The Heart of the King) before and this second book was a great addition to the series.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was so nice to find myselef again in that world and read again about the characters from the first book but also discovering new ones.
It was really neat to be able to see what happens to the character next. J.J Fischer kept developping them and she also took the time to develop new characters. It was great because the « new » characters didn’t replace the « old » ones and I really enjoyed that.
The only problem is… now I want to find out what happens next 🙂 I can’t wait for the third book to come out !
    — I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone. —

“Our future may be a mere memory to the Divine Will, and it is true that he oversees and arranges all according to his plans, but the memories are ours to make.”

This is book 2 in a four book series so I went in knowing to expect more character growth and not so much plot movement, but I was pleasantly surprised and delighted to see so much world and plot building. The first book set the world up so beautifully and introduced the main players of the series. This book threw in a new main character at the very beginning and led the reader in a parallel subplot to Rigan and Corcoran’s. Isel was a breath of fresh air, so different from Rigan in her heart, thoughts and action. Soren had much more depth to his character than shown in book 1 and I was ecstatic to get to know him better. Isel’s gentle kindness and intelligence matched Soren’s intuition, humility, and cleverness. I am not a fan of love triangles so was not thrilled to see it (again) in the series. How the romance will play out was still unclear at the end, but we have two more books to come so here is hoping to a happy ending, especially for Soren.

Rigan and Corcoran had smaller roles in this book. Corcoran had his battle scenes and a few other appearances near the end, which disappointed me because he is my favorite character. Rigan dwelled in self-pity for most of the book, fueled by selfishness, self-righteousness, fear, and doubt. I did not love how whiny and nasty she became towards everyone trying to help her, but she did go through a lot in the first book and in this one too. And there are plot twists! So many of them that my head is spinning at this point. I cannot wait for the next book to give me some answers; I have more questions now than I did when I started the book.

Anyone who loves fantasy would absolutely love this book and series. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of WhiteCrown Publishing. I was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

This is the second book in Fischer’s Painted Wind series. I highly recommend that if you have not read the first book yet, The Heart of the King, you should read it before this one so you’re acquainted with the world Fischer has created, and know who the main characters are. And if you don’t like books ending with all sorts of cliffhangers, you may want to put of reading Reign Breaker until Fischer has finished the series.

The first book was not a relaxing read, and I think this one is even worse. There are moments of calm when relationships are moving in the right direction, there are new characters to get to know, and there is a really fun new animal introduced (I want one!) However, calm breaks are few and far between, the evil Shro Khan are making too much headway, and most of the characters spend more time in conflict with their friends than working together to combat the enemy.

The book is very well written, but I sure hope books 3 and 4 come out real soon!!

I seriously have never been so completely upset with a author before! How can a person end a book like that! What am I even supposed to do with my life until the next book comes out now! This is going to low key be liveing in the back of my head continuously until September…..

The first book in this series felt like a lot of ground laying and world building, I could tell it was leading up to bigger things. Reign Breaker has gone far beyond my expectations of bigger things! I can not wait for the next book and I am so thrilled I am on J. J. Fischers team so I already know I do not have to wait as long as everyone else, no I am not at all sorry about that I NEED this next book! This book has gone in such a different direction, it even changed direction a few times, I would never have guessed the story was going to unfold like it did! I tried to go to sleep after finishing it but I could not stop thinking about what I had just read, so here I am writing this review at a late night hour.

    J. J. Fischers characters are the shining stars of her books and they once agian shine brightly. All the characters have such depth and feeling. You really get way to invested in these book people. My new favorite character might just be Isel, I really admired her quite strength and resilience. Hidding at a ball is not what the usual MC does and I loved that contrast of the reality of being overwhealmed and fearful. We all think we would be thrilled to be at a real ball, but I bet reality would be more feelings like Isels.

I am once agian wishing there was bookmarks of the animals in this series! A Meehir bookmark would be fantastic!

It is hard to say to much about Reign Breaker without giving away spoilers. There is so much I want to gush about but that would ruin the book for others! The plot in this book is superb I can not wait to see what happens next!

I received a copy of the book from the publisher. My opinions, as always, are my own.

Full of intrigue, danger, rebellion, a few monsters, fantasy, and a touch of potential romance, this book really has it all! Book 2 in the Painted Wind series picks up where the first book ends and jumps head first into the fray. Rebellions are strengthening, the kingdoms grow more dangerous by the day, and the monsters seem to be unstoppable. Once I started I didn’t want to put this book down. The suspense kept building and I didn’t have a guess as to what twist was coming next. The characters are wonderfully developed with both depth and feeling. their internal struggles make each one more real and helps pull the reader even more into the story. I found myself wanting to warn them when danger (or poor decisions) was coming. They each had their learning moments but we’ll have to wait for the following books to see if it helps. This is definitely a cliff hanger ending with nothing finalized.
J.J. Fischer has taken the reader on another wild adventure. This light vs darkness story pulls the reader in and pins them in the story until the last page. I can’t wait for the next book in this series! This is definitely a must read! Put it on your TBR but do not leave it there for long! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

What a ride!!! After finishing The Heart of the King, I was more than ready for the next one and Reign Breaker did not disappoint.

I was captivated from the start and did not expect all the twists this story took, and definitely did not expect the ending. I am once again ready for the next one, and the incredibly talented JJ Fischer won’t be able to write fast enough.

One of the things I love about this book is that it is a continuation of book 1. Yes, the main focus is now on Isel and Soren and the Kingdom of Jardia, but we still follow Rigan and Corcoran’s story as well as several other beloved characters from Heart of the King.

I highly recommend this well-written fantasy that is filled with action, romance, intrigue, and spiritual depth, and I seriously can’t wait for book three.

Be warned…this is a “I don’t want to stop reading book”.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but the views and opinions are completely my own.

If you loved The Heart of the King, get ready — this sequel does not disappoint.
The new characters are such a highlight — Isel just wants a quiet life with her books, but ends up pulled into a world of intrigue and deadly secrets , and her dynamic with the brilliant and brooding Crown Prince Soren is one you won’t stop thinking about. And it’s such a treat getting to catch up with Rigan and others too.
The world-building is rich, the story is gripping, and the twists will keep you glued to the page. JJ weaves adventure, romance, and faith together so naturally — it just flows.
An absolutely brilliant read that’ll leave you desperate for more.
